Scott's Balaclava

Scott has been complaining that his face gets really cold on his nightly bike rides since it's been sub-freezing and all. If you wonder why he's riding his bike every night, in cold weather, see his
New Year's Resolutions! He's been asking for a Balaclava for a while, and I'd never seen one in a store to buy. Since I 've been on this sewing kick lately, I thought "How hard can it be?" I tracked down
this pattern from The Green Pepper, gathered the supplies and got to work. It wasn't too hard - the worst part was applying the binding around the face cutout. It called for a fabric with 4-way stretch and it was just a little challenging to work with. All in all, I think it tcame out well. The pattern also came with the pieces for a children's balaclava and neckwarmers - I may consider making the girls some out of some pink fleece I picked up from the remant bin.
We are Non-fiction
The girls were taking a bath together the other night and were playing with the toys. Megan was holding a Dora doll. The conversation went something like this:
Megan: "Mommy, Dora is...what's that word for not real?"
Me: "Pretend?"
Megan: "No, no."
Me: "Imaginary?"
Megan: "NO. Fiction. Dora is fiction and Molly and I are. Um. Non-Fiction. Right?"
Me: "Yes, I guess that's true."
I thought it was funny. They must be talking about the different types of books at school lately. Anyway, I was impressed.
Doll Clothes
So, after the wild success of the pillowcase, I decided to venture to Jo-Ann's for some supplies and see what good stuff I could find in the remant bins. While there, I was sucked in by the $5 for $5 sale on patterns. I figured doll clothes would be a good way to learn how to do stuff like that without needing so much fabric, so I picked up a few patterns. I made these outfits for the girls' dolls in fabrics of their choice (Molly's on the left & Megan's on the right). They're not perfect - I sewed the lace on the wrong side of the pants on Molly's outfit and the velcro in Megan's doll sleeper was supposed to be a zipper but I couldn't find one in the right size. I'm still learning, but still having fun.
I picked up some patterns for Barbie clothes, too. I tried one and there won't be any photos of it. Barbie clothes are HARD. Since I can't resist a good sale, I also picked up some simple looking summery dress patterns for the girls. I guess the next step is to commit to some fabric or something like that. I'm looking forward to trying them out!
My First Project!

I got a sewing machine for Christmas and wanted to start out with something fairly easy as my first project. A friend pointed me towards these fairly easy
directions for making a pillowcase and so I headed to the fabric shop & picked out some Valentines day fabric. Megan was thrilled with her pillowcase and had to stay up watching me sew so she could use it that evening. This sewing things is kind of fun :)
