Hippos for Molly

I finished up a dress for Molly yesterday during their naps - long, due to the rainy day fun :) She was pleased to model it for me when she woke up. I'll make a bright pink pair of leggings to wear underneath for when it's cooler. She really liked it.

And a closeup because she's such a cutie.

The band-aid on her cheek is covering a bug bite. She keeps picking at it and making it bleed so we've had to keep it covered. It's almost gone now :)

Fall Wardrobe for Megan

I participate in a group called The Fabric Obsession. It's a coop group of fabric addicted ladies who like to collect fabric sew who pool their purchasing power to get wholesale prices - great fun! In addition to the fabric buys, there folders where we can discuss sewing related questions as well as occasional challenges to create something. There was recently a challenge to create a 6 piece fall wardrobe with two accessories. I decided to enter, and even despite my vertigo, managed to finish up just in the nick of time.

All of my pieces are teal/turquoise and were made for Megan. I was inspired by the colors in the Park Slope fabrics I got from the coop. The teal cord is from Joann's, as is the lining for the jacket hood and the knit for the tee & leggings. The fleece for the jacket came from the PA Fabric Outlet. The lace on the purse & peasant top came from my grandmother's stash - it was in the drawer of her sewing table when I inherited it.

I was able to finish everything up yesterday afternoon and here it is all together: A teal cord jumper from a New Look pattern, the coat is from Ottobre Designs, a skirt I kind of made up based on parts of a Simplicity pattern, a peasant top based on a Simplicity pattern, leggings from a New Look pattern and a tee from a Kwik Sew pattern. Accessories are a headband from the Heather Bailey's free tutorial and the purse pattern is available from Ottobre's website.

And some individual pictures:

And a few modeled pictures.

Excuse messy hair & non-matching dress. She wanted to model this as soon as it was finished.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project, but I'm ready to work with some new colors!

Lettuce edged skirt for Molly

Last night, I was working on a little skirt for Molly from some knit I found at JoAnn's a while back. When I realized it was going to be too short for her I decided to see if I could do a lettuce edge on a regular sewing machine rather than a folded hem. I found this tip in a Google search and it worked really well on a scrap of the fabric so I decided to go for it!

http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/review/readreview.pl?readreview=1&ID=344

It took a while to finish up the hem, two times around, but I'm happy with how it came out for my first try. I think I'll be reserving this technique for sleeves & leggings hems from now on! The skirt is still really short, but I think it will work for a bit. I used Kwik Sew 3501 and thought it was really easy to put together. I'll definitely be making more of them in a bigger size.

Here's an action shot from this morning - she loves it. Sorry it's blurry - I couldn't get her to stand still! I think the length will work for the summer and I'll make some pink leggings for the fall when it's too short.

Molly's turn!

I finally finished Molly's dress like Megan's last weekend. It ended up just being too much fabric, so I cut the bottom tier down and shortened it. I think it still twirls pretty well :) Molly loved it - Scott said that when she wore it she told everyone "Mommy sewed this dress for me." It's a little wide for her - she's a skinny minnie - I need to learn how to alter these patterns before I start sewing!

Megan's Ladybug Dress

This is my latest creation for Megan...a very twirly strawberry & ladybug dress. I used a McCall's pattern and made the bodice a size 5. When she tried it on, it was huge and didn't look good at all. So I had to remake the bodice in a size 4. While I was at it, I also ended up doing the straps as ties rather than regular straps as the pattern called for. I love this combo of berries, ladybugs and polka dots and she loves it too. So much so that I woke up this morning to her calling me asking for help getting the straps tied!
And one more of her swinging in it. Sorry her face looks shiny, I couldn't figure out how to fix it in Photoshop and the picture was too cute not to share!

Mama's got a brand new bag!

Ok, so it's a dorky title. But I'm just so darn proud of myself. I had to show off my latest creation. I made this bag all by myself! I found an awesome tutorial online and ended up with this great bag. I wasn't sure how well it would go on my first attempt, so I found some fabrics in the remnant bin at Joann's for around $5 and went to work. I am so happy with it that I can see myself making several more!

See...lots of pockets inside too. One is big and one is split, so my phone & keys can go in there without getting lost. Next, I need to find directions for a cell phone holder and make one to match each bag :)

P.S. In real life, the colors match more closely than they appear to in the pictures. They both have the same creamy white background - I promise!

Sundresses

They had this neat-o pre-shirred fabric at Joann's and I thought it would be fun to make the girls sundresses out of it. With Molly's, I decided to make the skirt tiered, so that it would be more twirly. I think hers came out adorable.

I had planned to do the same with Megan's, but she had other plans. She wanted me to make it straight, so I did. She also wanted her straps criss-crossed in the back, which I tried. Unfortunately, I think that just made it pucker. Also, the fabric I got for hers had a longer section shirred than Molly's did. I think it is too long because it comes down over her belly and doesn't lay very nicely. Maybe if they have it on sale sometime, I'll try another one for Megan with the shorter fabric.
